Requirements for TN Nurses

Serenity Home Healthcare is hiring qualified nurses from Canada and Mexico to work in the United States under TN status.

Canadian Citizens

Canadian nurses may work in the U.S. under TN status by presenting an offer letter from Serenity Home Healthcare at a U.S. port of entry.

Dependents (spouse and unmarried children under 21) may apply for TD status to accompany the nurse during the employment period.

Key information for Canadian Citizens

  • TN dependents under the TD status, may study in the U.S. but are not authorized to work.
  • TD Status for Canadian Dependents
    • Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of a TN visa holder may enter the United States in TD (dependent) status. Canadian citizen dependents do not need a visa stamp and may apply for entry directly at a U.S. port of entry with proof of relationship and evidence of the TN worker’s valid TN status.
    • TD dependents are not permitted to work in the U.S., but may attend school. Their status is valid for the same period as the TN principal’s authorization.

Required Documents for TD Application

  • Passport
  • Marriage or birth certificates to prove relationship
  • Copy of TN principal’s I-94 or I-797 (if already issued)
  • TN employer letter
  • Proof of intent to return to Canada may be requested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the port of entry.

Support

  • Upon arrival, Serenity will provide one month of accommodation.

Requirements 

  • Proof of successful completion of the NCLEX-RN examination
  • A degree in nursing from an accredited institution
  • A valid Illinois Registered Nurse license, or proof of eligibility to obtain an Illinois RN license through endorsement prior to employment
  • Educational credentials, including nursing diploma and official transcripts, and proof of any required professional licenses issued by the appropriate authority
  • Credential evaluation/VisaScreen (or equivalent) confirming education and licensure meet U.S. standards.

Mexican Citizens

Mexican registered nurses must obtain a TN visa at a U.S. consulate or embassy before traveling to the United States. This requires completing the DS-160 visa application, paying the applicable fee, and attending a visa interview.

  • Once the TN visa is issued, the nurse may then request TN admission at a U.S. port of entry.
  • TN status is temporary, with initial admission up to three years
